Even if you use drain stoppers, hair can still get into your drain and slow it down. You can either remove all hair from the drain by pulling it out manually or breaking up any clumps that are large enough to pass through the drain.

Hair is most likely to be the problem if your bathroom, bathtub, or shower drains don’t drain efficiently. Try these methods to stop slow draining. You’ll likely be able to quickly fix the problem by cleaning out your hair. Don’t worry, we’ve provided the tools that you will need to avoid touching the hair.

Plunging can be substituted for baking soda or vinegar

You will need grease-fighting soap, vinegar, baking soda, water boiling equipment, and a cup plunger. To begin, pour some dish soap down your drain. Mix the baking soda with the dish soap. Be sure to empty the baking soda down the sink. After you have done this, pour the vinegar into the drain. You should see a chemical reaction in your drain that causes it to fizz.

Wait five minutes until the fizzing stops. Then boil some water. Once the water boils, slowly pour it down the drain. The vinegar and baking soda will dissolve hair while the water will help it flow down the drain. You can now plunge. Run some water down the drain and plunge using your cup plunger take out the drain stopper. Although you might be able to remove the stopper right away, it is likely that you will need a screwdriver. This is a good time to clean the drain stopper from your sink. Make sure that no hair falls into the other drains!

You should now see a clear opening for the drain. You’ll likely see grossly clumped hair if you shine your flashlight into the drain. Use your gloves to grab the hair. You can also make a snake from a hanger if your pliers are too small or difficult to reach. To ensure everything is working properly, rinse the hair with hot water.

Zip-it is a great tool!

A Zip-it tool, a flexible and long barbed plastic stick, is used to clean drains. These tools are inexpensive and can be reused or discarded at most hardware stores. Simply insert the barbed length into your drain to use a zip-it. The barbs catch hairs in your drain as you pull the zipper it out. Although zip-its can fit through most drain stoppers easily, we recommend that you remove the stopper.

To get the best results, twist or condense the zip-it tool so that it slides in this direction as you insert it and pull it out. A hot water rinse is a good way to follow up on your initial cleaning. After using a zip-it device, you might want to use baking soda and vinegar. Keep a few zip-it instruments handy in your bathroom. This will make it easy to be ready for the next time you have to remove hair clumps.
